7 Positions to Master Shower Sex

Despite what we've seen in Hollywood and in porn, how should you really approach it?

The shower can be a notoriously difficult place to have sex.

It's small, cramped, steamy, wet—and did you know water can strip away the vagina's natural lubrication? However, when you master this white whale of the romantic world, the excitement and taboo nature of shower sex begin to make sense.

We asked a couple of sexperts and shower-sex pros for the optimal ways to have sex in the shower, as well as some tips and tricks to make the shower a sexier place for all. Spoiler: Don't forget the silicone lube.

Between a wall and a wet place

For people with a little more wiggle room in the shower, try using the space to your advantage. Position yourselves with one person leaning their back up against the shower wall while their partner penetrates from the front.

"A lot of people like to wrap a leg around their partner in that position," said Rachel Zar, a marriage and family therapist/AASECT-certified sex therapist. "It allows for deeper penetration."

All hail the queen

Made for lovers of everything oral, All Hail the Queen has your partner standing wide-legged in the shower while you crouch, sit or kneel with your head at crotch level. The receiver then straddles her lover's face as they give her oral pleasure. She can also move up and down as she pleases, allowing her to set her own pace.

"Pairing this position with some roleplay can help you and your lover get in a royal mood as you play out who the monarch is and who is the loyal subject," said Marla Renee Stewart, M.A., a sexologist/sexpert for the sexual wellness brand Lovers. "Great for people with back-facing vulvas, too."

Take a seat

Unless you're in a friend's bathroom or communal shower (which we really can't condone—public fornication is generally frowned upon, and illegal), it's important to remember this is your bathroom with your rules. There's no reason for you or your partner to feel pressured to remain standing as if shower sex is some Olympic event. Try a simple position, like cowgirl, on the shower floor.

"Just because you're having a shower and not a bath doesn't mean you can't sit down, especially if you're worried about that full control," Zar explained. "Sitting on the edge of the shower can be a great way to do this. You're getting the sensation from the fact that you're having sex and also getting the sensation from being warm and wet, which in combination can be a full-body, sexual experience."

In it to win it

This standing position can be done over a couch or bed as well as in the shower. One person spreads their legs apart and—with their hands—spreads their bottom open, giving the penetrator full control to go "all in." If you have enough space in the shower, then by all means go for it, but we do recommend using a bath mat for this one since it can be easier for the person not doing the spreading to kneel or stand outside the shower.

"To add some kinky zing, use a spreader bar at their ankles and/or cuff their wrists and thighs together," Renee Stewart said.

Give 'em head

Shower sex can take a boatload of practice, energy and time to perfect. Shower oral sex, on the other hand, is a lot easier to wrap your mind, and mouth, around. If you think about the amount of space needed for oral sex, you can get a lot done with a standard-sized shower.

"Oral sex or mutual masturbation in the shower can feel safe and natural because it's what we're used to," Zar said. "A lot of women really enjoy extra stimulation on their vulva and clitoris with the showerhead."

Clampdown

A profoundly underrated Clash song or the perfect way for two people with a more athletic build to indulge in a porn-esque fantasy? Why not both? To master the Clampdown, the person doing the penetrating stands in a dry shower (you can turn the water on after) while the person being penetrated faces them with their hands around their neck and their legs around their waist.

"Instead of crossing their legs around their waist, the penetrator holds their feet with their hands and the person being penetrated uses that leverage when doing their pelvic thrusts," Renee Stewart said. "It's best if you both have rhythm and can get on a consistent beat. Use music as a way to guide your thrusts."

Leg up

Facing away from the showerhead, back to front, try penetrating from behind (à la doggy style) while the person being penetrated puts their leg up onto the bathtub ledge to keep steady. You can do it, too! Remember, you have the entire shower to your disposal, so use any surface or ledge to steady yourselves.

"A lot of this depends on height, and remember that your hands and mouths are a great alternative to penetration right before," Zar said.

Did we mention lube? Both Zar and Renee Stewart recommend lube as a great way to enhance your shower sex experience because water naturally washes away the vagina's natural lubricant. Silicone-based lube is your friend here, the more the merrier.
