NYC's Iconic Sex Museum to Open New Location in Miami
The legendary New York institution the Museum of Sex, located at 27th Street and 5th Avenue, showcases the history, evolution and cultural significance of human sexuality. Also known locally as MoSex, its owners have announced plans to open a second location in Miami in spring 2023.
The Florida outpost will be housed in a 32,000-square-foot converted warehouse in Miami's Allapattah neighborhood, featuring three exhibition galleries, a gift shop and a bar.
"We are excited to reach this major milestone in our history and to bring our vision to the vibrant cultural landscape of Miami," said Daniel Gluck, the museum's executive director and founder, in a news release.
Inaugural exhibits
The Miami Museum of Sex will kick off with an opening exhibition lineup that includes "Hajime Sorayama: Desire Machines," a collection of "sexy robot" sculptures and 20 never-before-seen futuristic and erotic paintings from the acclaimed Japanese artist. Sorayama has public collections on display in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and has previously collaborated with the likes of men's fashion collection Dior Men and Grammy Award-winning singer the Weeknd.
Another component of the inaugural lineup is "Modern Sex: 100 Years of Design and Decency," an exhibit examining how the design, marketing and distribution of sexual health products have evolved over the past century.
"Our inaugural programming perfectly embodies our ambitions to be a thought-provoking forum around sex and sexuality, and to bring forth a unique, publicly loved and critically acclaimed cultural offering to Miami," Gluck explained.
As with the New York location, the Miami branch will feature the permanent immersive installation, "Super Funland: Journey Into the Erotic Carnival." The Miami version of the modern, eroticized carnival will be larger than the NYC original, with 20 interactive amusements, games and a rococo-style mermaid tank and performance space as the centerpiece. The installation was designed with the help of artists and designers, including drag icon RuPaul Charles.
About the NYC Museum of Sex
The Museum of Sex opened in October 2002 in New York City. It's located in the Tenderloin neighborhood, a former redlight district famous for its 19th-century brothels, strip clubs and dance halls that originally ran from 24th Street to 42nd Street and from Fifth Avenue to Seventh Avenue. The adults-only institution houses a permanent collection of over 20,000 artifacts, including art, clothing, tech and historical ephemera.
Currently on display is the "Artifact (XXX): Selections From Secret Collections" exhibition, which includes curios such as an early vibrator made in Great Britain and a braille issue of Playboy magazine.
